About Me
A lifelong Madisonian, I have spent many years falling in love with the spaces, nature, and people of this city. My art practice has deep seated roots in the quirky, free-spirited energy of the Midwest. Upon graduating from Memorial High School, I didn’t let the comfort of home stop me from pursuing my dreams of working in films and videogames out West. I spent one year at Otis College of Art and Design, and in that time I re-learned everything I knew about art from the ground up. But as much as I grew as an artist, I quickly realized my passion lay not in a game studio, but in teaching. I moved back home and enrolled in the Art Education Program at UW Madison. Since then that passion has bloomed into a devotion, and education has found its way into every facet of my life.
Philosophy
II believe in fostering creative self expression and informed design in the classroom. Through a foundation in design, students are given the artistic tools to bring their unique creative vision to life. In school, students develop not just a bank of knowledge, but a toolbox to navigate their world and the life that lies ahead. Art is uniquely situated in this system at the intersection of so many other courses. Throughout the artistic process, we create connections between our own lived experiences, historical context, the mathematics of lines, the chemistry of clay, outward pressures and inner desires. In many other classes, students learn the tools to find answers. In art, they learn to ask questions and find their own solutions.
I hope this ability to explore personally significant work will extend beyond the studio, giving them the freedom to express themselves in considered, clear ways. The ability to make meaningful connections to our work is deeply important, and art provides an analytical framework that can be used to approach unknown situations.
